AI and Grantwriting: What Charities Need to Know

This summer, Purposefully conducted an informal, exploratory survey with grant writers in Vancouver to understand how artificial intelligence is influencing the world of nonprofit grant writing. Although our sample was small and our scope was broad, the results showed that charities are cautiously testing AI tools to create efficiencies.

Survey results highlighted several key challenges for grant writers. Finding suitable grants remains the most significant difficulty, cited by more than 80% of respondents. Two-thirds named the processes of researching, writing, and editing proposals as ongoing struggles, while a third pointed to uncertainty about what funders expect. Some participants also noted that funders often favor smaller organizations, adding another layer of complexity.

Two-thirds of participants reported that they are already using AI tools, primarily ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. Usage of specialized grant-writing AI platforms was not reported, potentially due to cost or familiarity with mainstream options. Notably, 31% of AI users had relied on these tools for ten or more grant applications, showing that for some, AI has already become a routine resource.

All grant writers using AI said that it helped streamline their workflow and save time. However, most remain unsure whether using AI is leading to more successful funding applications.

Despite the benefits, respondents expressed concern about accuracy, the loss of human connection, and data privacy. Survey respondents shared they require help with setting up and managing AI tools, understanding reasons for unsuccessful applications, comparing available options, and maintaining human support alongside AI.

While AI is rapidly becoming a part of the grant writing landscape, offering real gains in efficiency, challenges remain, and there is a desire to ensure technology supports—rather than overshadows—the wisdom, relationships, and stories at the heart of grantwriting.
